The Popular Mechanicals and CGTC, creators behind 2016 production of The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee at MTC’s Lawler Theatre present A New Brain, another William Finn production. The fast paced, surreal and irreverent musical follows Gordon, a struggling songwriter who undergoes a life-changing medical emergency. Through themes of love, loss and revelation, this story is about a man who learns to appreciate the life he has rather than the life he thinks he deserves.

Produced by The Popular Mechanicals and CGTC, the show features a professional cast from various elite performing arts institutions including WAAPA, NIDA and the VCA. Together the cast has worked on stage in green room award-winning productions from the likes of Cameron Macintosh, Disney Theatricals and The Production Company to an impressive array of indie music theatre projects across Melbourne.

“No one is at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee [is a loser], including us, the audience; we’re the winners and walk away laughing…G-o-l-u-p-t-i-o-u-s. That means delicious and this musical is.” - The Weekly Review

“A spectacle that would put any rock eisteddfod to shame” – Aussie Theatre

“A perfectly staged and fast paced show that would lift the spirits of anyone from 8 to 88.” – Stage Whispers

“Excellent, both side-splittingly funny and heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and well worth checking out whether you’ve never heard of it, or you’re a well-worn veteran, like myself. You won’t be disappointed. – Theatre press
